Whether it was an application to match high school students with tutor volunteers, or a service to help university students find free rides to the grocery store, innovative ideas were buzzing in the hallways of St. Patrick’s Building on April 30.

About 100 girls practised their pitches in huddled groups, awaiting their chance to have their original app prototypes judged on the final competition day of the Technovation Challenge and they were rewarded with a visit from federal cabinet minister Catherine McKenna.

On April 4, 90 people from 54 organizations filled Carleton University’s Senate Room to hear Roni Zehavi, CEO of CyberSpark, and examine synergistic opportunities between Canadian and Israeli firms. People from large and small companies in Ottawa, Montreal, New York and Kingston accounted for two-thirds of attendees.

Tony Bailetti, director of Carleton University’s Technology Innovation Management (TIM) program, has won Ontario’s Leadership in Immigrant Employment Award in the entrepreneur category.

Scotiabank – Ottawa won the award in the employer category and the Ontario Human Rights Commission in the champion category.

The Hon Michael Chan, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and International Trade, presented the three awards at a ceremony held in Toronto on March 7.

Carleton University approved a new Master of Entrepreneurship (M.Ent.) in Technology Innovation Management on Friday, Feb. 26. Students can now register in the new M.Ent. and start in fall 2016.

Niki Galagedara, a Grade 12 student at Longfields-Davidson Heights Secondary School, believes women will play a huge role in technological advances in the future.

Technology companies can spark economic growth and community development. That’s certainly the case in Ottawa, where the dynamic tech sector is a cornerstone of the economy.

And it’s starting to happen in northern Israel’s Galilee region, where Arab-Israeli entrepreneurs are creating companies, attracting investors, and sowing the seeds of cross-cultural and international collaboration.
