Behind locked doors at a municipal building in the Ottawa suburb of Orléans, Tony Bailetti is quietly working on a plan to turn Canada into a global powerhouse for fighting cyberattacks.

The professor is known for nurturing more than 200 companies in his job straddling Carleton University's business and engineering departments.

These days, he jokes that he practically sleeps at VENUS Cybersecurity, a non-profit hub he created in a former town council office.

Dave Thomas, software engineering veteran and adjunct research professor at Carleton University, delivered the Technology Innovation Management (TIM) Lecture on March 8. His talk centered on the advent of massive memory storage and how it will affect the computer industry.

“Nowadays, it’s impossible to buy a machine with less than 128GB of memory, maybe even 256GB,” said Thomas. “By 2018, if not earlier, I think we’ll see a laptop with 10 terabytes of memory for under $1,000.”

Working a full-time job and being a full-time Masters student simultaneously is no easy feat. From meeting deadlines to completing group projects and presentations – juggling between two very time consuming priorities can prove to be a challenge to say the least. Carleton University’s Technology Innovation Management (TIM) Program sees students successfully manage these priorities on a daily basis.

A new Canadian space industry startup based in Ottawa has its sights set high after landing its first major contract with the Canadian Space Agency.

During this 21-month contract Mission Control will develop an Autonomous Soil Assessment System for planetary rovers with the eventual objective of deploying the technology on a planetary exploration mission.

When Vignesh Sundaresan landed in Canada in September 2013 to attend Carleton University, the then 25-year-old from India was like “a dog in the park,” he recalls, “running around and walking downtown just to get the feel of the city.”

Riding the length of the O-Train and tasting the infamous “beaver tail,” Sundaresan thought Ottawa was the most beautiful city he’d ever seen.
